#7 Florence defeats #1 Cullman
Florence avenged an earlier season loss by defeating 6A #1 Cullman in dramatic fashion Tuesday night at Falcon Field. Florence opened the match on the attack with several long range shots just missing the mark. The attack continued until Freshman Eddie Alvarado opened the scoring for the Falcons midway through the first half on an unassisted putback goal off the goalkeepers save. Cullman came on very strong after going down a goal, only to be held in check by the Falcon’s defensive midfield, backs, and goalkeeper Edson Casarrubias. Both teams traded chances as the battle for the midfield waged into halftime with the Falcons up 1-0. Florence set the tone coming off the break with several good chances on goal. Cullman countered and seemed to gain the momentum midway through the second half. A goal against the run of play by senior Omar Jones was disallowed for handling, but the Falcons seized momentum from that point, and a few minutes later, went up 2-0 on a laser free kick from 25 yards out by Sam Wilson with just 12 minutes to go. The game then opened up with Cullman throwing numbers forward and Florence counter-attacking resulting in a rocket shot off the crossbar by Jonathan Contreras. Florence was able to kill the game off for a solid 2-0 victory in front of a festive home crowd that witnessed the third #1 team in the state going down to the Falcons in the past two season. Sealing the shutout were defenders Parker Degroote and Will Reed, midfielders Max Mao and James Ridgeway. Matthew Paul and Deon Jones played critical roles in securing the win for Florence.
